K2M Inc. will start to directly sell its products in the United Kingdom.

Leesburg-based K2M, a five-year-old developer of next-generation spine technologies, is opening a direct sales and distribution office in the U.K.

K2M’s entrance into the U.K. started in 2008 when it introduced several of its spinal, cervical plate and interbody systems.

“Setting up a European base is a clear statement that we are committed to expanding the availability of our innovative technology globally and supporting surgeons treating the most difficult spinal deformities,” said Christian Johnson, K2M’s European vice president.

K2M’s chairman is John Kostuik, who previously was chief of spine surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
