K2M Announces Global Launch of EVEREST Degenerative Spinal System at 2011 North American Spine Society Annual Meeting
LEESBURG, VA … November 2, 2011 – K2M, Inc., a spinal device company developing innovative solutions for the treatment of complex spinal pathologies and minimally invasive procedures, today announced the global launch of the EVEREST™ Degenerative Spinal System at the 2011 North American Spine Society Annual Meeting (NASS) in Chicago.
The EVEREST Degenerative Spinal System is a top-loading pedicle screw system featuring the ability to accommodate titanium and cobalt chrome rods of two different diameters, 5.5 and 6.0 mm, and a screw thread pitch designed to maximize both osteoporotic and dense bone fixation. Additionally, this next generation set screw based system features a mixed material housing intended to minimize head splay, compared to a screw head made entirely of titanium, as well as improve the biomechanical performance of the construct. The modified square thread of the locking set screw improves the fixation characteristics and reduces the potential for cross-threading.
“A combined team of surgeons and engineers worked closely together to design the EVEREST Degenerative Spinal System, which utilizes both titanium and cobalt chrome rods and enhances thread pitch for use in both osteoporotic and dense bone fixation,” stated Dr. John Carbone, Orthopedic Surgeon at Harborview Reconstructive Spine & Orthopedic Specialists. “In my opinion, the strength, range of motion, and stiffness of EVEREST provide surgeons the intraoperative flexibility to address a variety of surgical pathologies.”
Dr. Carbone will be presenting on the clinical application of the EVEREST Degenerative Spinal System in a Hands-On Demonstration at NASS, today at 3:30 pm Central (K2M Booth #1616).
“The expansion of our degenerative product portfolio has been an important piece of our growth strategy,” stated Eric Major, K2M’s President and CEO. “The evolutionary set screw based EVEREST Degenerative Spinal System provides surgeons with innovative flexibility to address patient needs.”
K2M announced 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market EVEREST Degenerative in April 2011. EVEREST Degenerative can treat Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD), as well as more complex pathologies.
